Bosch Track and Trace – Hardware & Software Solutions

Container management in the automotive industry

The automotive industry operates globally distributed, cross-plant logistics with high requirements for timing, quality, and costs.

Logistics therefore follows many paths. Bosch Track and Trace masters them all. Whether your load carriers, special load carriers, small load carriers (KLT), or reusable load carriers circulate in a closed loop between fixed partners or travel through an open loop with changing stations:

Our solution gives you end-to-end transparency. You reliably track containers, pallets, or special load carriers across all stations, reduce losses, and optimize your inventories — with an intelligent hardware and software solution that flexibly adapts to your logistics processes.

Bosch Track and Trace provides the position, inventory, and condition of every load carrier in real time via GPS, GSM, WLAN, or Bluetooth Low Energy. Shrinkage, search effort, and circulating inventories decrease noticeably — plug and play, independently of your existing IT infrastructure.

Bosch Track and Trace makes your entire load carrier fleet transparent.

Impact in the automotive industry
  1. less load carrier shrinkage and therefore fewer replacement purchases.
  2. greater transparency and therefore higher and more effective
    utilization of the container fleet.
  3. less search effort in the plant, at the supplier, and at the customer.

Typical tracking scenarios in the automotive industry

Four focus areas that OEMs, suppliers, and logistics service providers address to digitalize their supply chains, maximize efficiency, and protect valuable assets.

Robust sensor technology for supply chain, production, and vehicle testing

Our hardware was developed for demanding industrial and automotive applications. It is robust, reliable, and designed to support logistics and production processes transparently and efficiently. The solution consists of gateways and sensors that can be used individually or in combination depending on the use case. Gateways handle data transmission and enable the tracking of assets and shipments, while sensors can capture additional information directly at the object. For integrated applications, all-in-one devices offer the functions of a gateway and sensor in one compact housing. They are particularly suitable for monitoring valuable assets, prototypes, or test vehicles — including location capture, movement information, and condition monitoring. The hardware is designed for use in environments with large temperature differences and high loads. This supports stable data capture and contributes to greater process reliability in complex automotive processes. With long-lasting components and a flexible system architecture, tracking infrastructures can be operated efficiently and adapted to different requirements.

BMW Group — rollout in production logistics

Since 2022, the BMW Group has been gradually rolling out the solution. As part of the expanded collaboration, more than 80% of over 500,000 large load carriers are to be equipped with Bosch trackers by the end of 2026. This will make a significant portion of the BMW logistics fleet digitally traceable. After initial pilot applications, use was successively expanded to additional container types, locations, and application areas, including in the field of e-mobility components.
